BUILDING/STRUCTURE

untitled_20230718_MJ_00070.jpg

This is a hero-shot of the soffit of Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, which is Le Corbusier's one and only work in North America. There are quite a few features in this photo that mark this building as a typical Le Corbusier's work, the slender columns used for elevating the upper structure (Pilotis and Open Plan); the geometric aesthetics of the curvature of the building contour; the raw concrete used for facade finishes ("Béton brut", as used in his response to Brutalism Architecture).

CLOSE-UP

The texture of the pre-cast concrete panels massively used in the building as well as its correspondence to the light changes.

COLOUR

This is the view through the glass block used in the wall of the stairwell.

LIGHT

untitled_20230718_MJ_00075.jpg

Light captured at 11am on the east facade of the building, as shown in the photo, the building does not open its view to the very east or west as its adjacent buildings does, from my interpretation, this design decision is facade made to decrease the amount of direct sunlight that falls into the building and helps cool the building down; what we are looking in this photo is an integration of the raw material of this building as well as an effective shading system.

DEPTH
